SALARY: $7,000.00 to $10,000 ANNUALLY
BENEFITS: THIS POSITION DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR BENEFITS DUE TO PART-TIME STATUS.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Deputy Coroner serves under the direction and supervision of the elected Prowers County Coroner. This position assists in the investigation of deaths within Prowers County as mandated by Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S. Title 30, Article 10, Section 606). Deputies respond to calls, perform scene investigations, assist with body recovery and transportation, document findings, and communicate with law enforcement, medical professionals, and families of the deceased. Deputy Coroners play an essential role in ensuring professional, thorough, and compassionate medicolegal death investigations for the citizens of Prowers County.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Respond to death scenes within Prowers County as assigned by the Coroner or senior deputies.
- Conduct preliminary investigations to determine jurisdiction and gather scene information.
- Photograph, document, and collect evidence in accordance with office protocols.
- Assist in identifying decedents and notifying next of kin when appropriate.
- Coordinate with law enforcement, EMS, fire, and medical personnel at scenes.
- Complete reports and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Assist in the transportation of decedents to the county morgue or contracted forensic facilities.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Participate in continuing education, training, and certification programs as required by the Coroner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Must reside in or near Prowers County and be available for on-call response.
- Ability to pass a background check and maintain high ethical standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work compassionately and respectfully with grieving families and the public.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Willingness to respond at all hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in law enforcement, EMS, nursing, or related investigative fields.
- Completion of or active pursuit of ABMDI (American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators) certification.
- Familiarity with C.R.S. 30-10-606 and medicolegal investigative procedures.
- Prior experience in handling sensitive or confidential information.
