Position Summary
The Assessor's Clerk provides administrative, clerical, and customer service support to the County Assessor's Office. This position assists with maintaining accurate property records, processing documentation, responding to public inquiries, and supporting assessment staff in the administration of Colorado property tax laws. The Assessor's Clerk serves as a primary point of contact for the public and contributes to the efficient operation of the office through accurate recordkeeping and professional customer service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Assist property owners, taxpayers, real estate professionals, and the general public in person, by telephone, and via email.
Answer questions regarding property ownership, assessed values, exemptions, maps, and assessment procedures within the scope of the position.
Prepare and maintain electronic and paper property records.
Enter, verify, and update ownership, address, and property information in assessment software.
Process deeds, affidavits, mobile home documentation, and other recorded property documents received from the Clerk and Recorder.
Assist with processing property tax exemptions, including Senior Homestead, Disabled Veteran, and other applicable exemptions.
Prepare correspondence, reports, notices, and forms.
Scan, file, and organize documents in accordance with records retention requirements.
Assist with annual assessment notices, appeal processing, and other statutory deadlines.
Operate standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, scanners, and multi-line telephone systems.
Maintain confidentiality of protected information.
Assist with special projects, audits, and office organization.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
General office procedures and administrative practices.
Customer service principles.
Modern office software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Basic recordkeeping and filing systems.
Business English, spelling, grammar, and mathematics.
Ability to:
Provide courteous and professional customer service.
Learn and apply Colorado property tax laws, regulations, and assessment procedures.
Maintain accurate records with attention to detail.
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Handle multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
Work independently and as part of a team.
Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, elected officials, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Language proficiency – bilingual a plus.
Experience
One to three years of clerical, administrative, customer service, or office support experience preferred.
Experience in a county assessor's office, government agency, title company, real estate, or property records environment is desirable.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Colorado driver's license may be required for occasional county business.
Ability to obtain and maintain applicable certifications within required timeframes.
Working Conditions
Primarily performed in a standard office environment.
Frequent interaction with the public.
Extended periods of sitting and computer work.
Occasional lifting of files or office materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
May require occasional overtime during statutory assessment deadlines and appeal periods.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of Colorado property taxation or assessment procedures.
Experience with Computer Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) systems.
